Frequently Asked Questions: Financial Aid

I have just been accepted into a program at GSE.  Can you tell me about financial aid opportunities at GSE?
There are two types of funding:
  • PennGSE scholarships and graduate assistantships
  • Loans

Scholarships and graduate assistantships are awarded by the financial aid committee after the admissions decision is made.  There is no application process for these awards and you will be notified with a letter if an award has been made for you.  Both the assistantships and scholarships are applied towards tuition.

In order to receive loans, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  We recommend that you complete it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov since it is processed much faster than the paper application.  University of Pennsylvania institution code for FAFSA is 003378.

Once you have been accepted into our school and have completed the FAFSA forms, you will receive an official financial aid package from the central Student Financial Services office.  This package will outline your budget for the academic year as well as your loan eligibility based on the information you provided on FAFSA.  When you fill out the FAFSA online, the processing takes about week and half to two weeks.  Then the information is sent to the central Student Financial Services Office.  It takes the central Student Financial Services Office about a week to two weeks to process your information and send out your financial aid package.

To check status of your package or to inquire about loans, you should contact the central Student Financial Services Office at 215-898-1988.  They handle all the loan issues, billing and tuition collection.

When will I receive Financial Aid Information?
Have you completed your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)?

Financial aid packages are mailed out starting late April.  You may want to contact the central Student Financial Services Office to find out approximately when you would be receiving your packet.  Their phone number is 215-898-1988.

If you have not filled out the FAFSA forms, you must do so immediately.  We recommend that you complete it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov since it is processed much faster than the paper application.  University of Pennsylvania institution code for FAFSA is 003378

I can’t pay my family contribution because I am quitting my job and will no longer have an income once I start my program.  What do I do?
Your financial aid package that stated your contribution was based on your last year’s earning.  If your income is changing dramatically while you are in school, your package can be adjusted.  Once you receive the financial aid package from the Student Financial Services office, you need to contact them and request an adjustment. They can be reached at 215-898-1988. You simply have to let them know that you will no longer have an income and thus cannot pay all of your contribution.

What is the tuition?

Tuition and fees can be found here.

I am an international student.  Can you tell me about funding opportunities for international students?
International students are eligible for PennGSE scholarships and assistantships but not federal aid such as Stafford and Perkins loans and CitiAssist loans. We recommend that you contact your government or private organizations for any funding opportunities.
