The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Program

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards scholarship to college students who have outstanding leadership potential and who intend to pursue careers in public service.

Fields of Study: Fields related to public service.

Eligibility: Candidates must attend an accredited U.S. college or university and be nominated by the institution's Truman Faculty Representative [candidates MAY NOT apply directly], be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, complete an application and write a policy recommendation, be in the upper quarter of their junior class, except for residents of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa or the Northern Marianas who must be in their senior class.

Award: Up to $30,000.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundations Graduate Scholarship Program

The mission of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. They focus in particular on scholarships for outstanding individuals with financial need.

Fields of Study: Open.

Eligibility: Candidates for this scholarship must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their undergraduate institution. Please see the list of designated faculty representatives. Candidates may not apply directly to the Foundation for this program.

Award: Each scholarship covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years. The amount and duration of awards will vary by student, based on the cost of attendance and length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum award per student is $50,000 per year.

Scholarships for Women

Business and Professional Women's (BPW) Foundation Career Advancement Scholarship Program

This is an annual program to assist women seeking the education necessary for entry or re-entry into the work force, or advancement within a career field.

Field of Study: Open.

Eligibility: Women at least 25 years of age and who are U.S. citizens and graduating within 12-24 months from date of grants. Applicants must demonstrate critical need for financial assistance. Ph.D. degree students are ineligible. Applicants must be registered in a degree program at an institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Award: Scholarships range from $500-$1,000

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Career Development Grants

Annual award to support women who are preparing to re-enter the work force, change careers, advance their current careers, or pursue their first advanced degree. Applicants must be entering or in the early stages of their degree programs.

Field of Study: All fields are eligible, but special consideration is given to AAUW members, minorities, and women pursuing degrees in non-traditional fields.

Eligibility: Women who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. are eligible.

Award: Grants range from $2,000 to $8,000. Funds are provided for tuition, fees, books, transportation (to/from/at school), and dependent care.

Scholarships for International Women

American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions is supported.

Fields of study: Open.

Eligibility: Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and plan to study in any country that is not their own are eligible for this award.

Award: Master's Fellowships are $18,000.

Scholarships for Minority Students

Gates Millennium Scholarship

The scholarship is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was established to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate education, in all discipline areas, and a graduate education for those students pursuing studies in mathematics, science, engineering, education or library science.

Fields of Study: Graduate degrees in mathematics, science, engineering, education or library science.

Eligibility: All applicants must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American; a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States; have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted); have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. (Eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant can only be determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov.)

Award: Awards will vary.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

This is an annual award to assist Hispanic-American graduate and undergraduate students in completing their higher education.

Fields of Study: All fields.

Eligibility: Citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. who are of Hispanic heritage and registered full-time in a degree program are eligible. At the time of application, students must have completed at least 12 undergraduate units, with high academic achievement, at a U.S. institution.

Award: Ranging from $1,000-$3,000.

Scholarships for New Americans

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

The Soros Fellowship for New Americans encourages and supports the contributions of new Americans to American life and culture. Fellows attend institutions of higher education in the United States.

Fields of Stud: All fields of study are eligible, whether leading to advanced professional or research degrees.

Eligibility: An applicant must either (1) be a resident alien, i.e. hold a Green Card, (2) be a naturalized U.S. citizen, or (3) be the child of naturalized citizen parents. Applicants should be no more than 30 years of age at the application deadline. Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree or be in their final year of undergraduate study. Continuing graduate students are eligible as long as they have completed no more than two years of graduate study.

Award: A stipend of $20,000 per year plus the payment of one-half of tuition charges, for up to two years of graduate study.
