Sharing Your Expertise

As GSE Alumni, you are a valuable resource of knowledge and experience. We seek to enhance the relationship between the academic practices of the university and the experiences of the professional world by establishing learning relationships between current students of Penn GSE and its alumni.

Why involve our alumni in a mentoring role? They not only share much of the same learning culture and university experience as their current counterparts but are also well aware of the personal and professional challenges faced by those trying to develop and manage their careers.

Penn GSE has inaugurated a new mentoring program Making a Difference – Motivational Mentoring.  The program aims to achieve the following:

  • Augment the learning experience of students beyond the academic arena
  • Enable and facilitate personal growth and professional development
  • Facilitate networking with educators and administrators in the education field
  • Promote a culture of learning, collaboration and shared expertise
  • Enhance the relationship of the School with its alumni and current students
  • Forge a stronger network between current students and alumni
  • Keep alumni involved and connected to the continued growth and development of the School

Getting involved
In order to participate all potential mentors and mentees are required to fill in an application form. This information provides the basis for the matching of mentors and mentees according to criteria such as occupation, experience, interest and background and/or development/growth objectives. All the mentoring activity is voluntary. As participation increases, the alumni network will prosper and offer more opportunities for GSE alumni and students. The program will begin at the start of each academic year, although there may be mentoring opportunities available (for mentees) throughout the year. All the participants will be matched according to career direction and experiences. Every mentor/mentee relationship is different and based solely on the mutual agreement of both parties. The primary goal for the partnership is to provide a source of information and reference for those involved in the program. Some relationships may be exclusively e-mail or phone. Others may involve “shadowing” opportunities or meetings, perhaps weekly, monthly or twice a year. Many will become long-term professional relationships that deepen as the mentor/mentee progress in their respective careers.
