Post-Master’s Certification Program in School Counseling
For graduates of the Psychological Services Masters Degree Program, University of Pennsylvania - Graduate School of Education

Students in the first fall semester of the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program may apply to our PA Department of Education-approved Post-Master’s Certification Program in School Counseling. This program involves an additional semester after the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program’s year, in which students work in a full-time internship supervised by a certified school counselor, and complete one academic course.

Internships and the concurrent supervision course, EDUC 697.001, Post-Master’s Internship in School Counseling, are offered only during the fall term. All internships are required to be full-time, five days per week, beginning with the first day of school, or before if there is an in-service training opportunity available for the intern.
For students seeking elementary or secondary certification: on-site supervision must be provided by a school counselor who holds the certificate which the student seeks (either elementary or secondary school counselor, not school psychologist, unless the school psychologist also holds the counseling certificate).  A minimum of 400 supervised clock hours must be accrued during the internship.

PA Department of Education - Information Booklet: Praxis Information, Required Forms for PA Certification as School Counselor - PLEASE NOTE:  Money Orders ONLY will be accepted for Nonrefundable $15.00 fee. (see checklist - Information Booklet) Other Forms of Payment will not be accepted.

Requirements for School Counseling certification vary from state to state. Many states beyond Pennsylvania prefer candidates for certification who have completed a two year academic degree in counseling. The Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program immediately followed by the Professional Counseling and Psychology MPhil. Program provides students with a continuous two-year course of study and increased field experiences as preparation toward certification in many states beyond Pennsylvania.

The new Full-time School Counseling Certification Program is now available on weekends. For more details, please see Applied Psychology-Human Development Division's new Professional School Counseling Program website.
