The
Educational Leadership Program for Aspiring Principals (ELPAP) trains
students to conceptualize and lead school improvement efforts. Its
unique cohort model of leadership development focuses on helping
students develop the competencies and knowledge base required to
become an effective instructional leader. The intensive program
integrates coursework with a 240-hr internship and enables program
candidates to earn Pennsylvania K-12 principal's
certificate and be eligible for certification in other states in
a 12-month period. Students admitted to the M.S.Ed. degree in Educational
Leadership, earning the master's degree along with the certificate
may finish coursework and graduate with the degree in the second year.
The
program's integrated design allows students to develop theoretical
concepts and leadership skills and to apply concurrently this knowledge
in practical school settings. Through the inquiry-based curriculum,
program candidates reflect on the dimensions of leadership that
are critical to effective K-12 school administrators. The program
is framed by three questions that are fundamental to student achievement
in schools:
 |
How
do students learn high-level skills across the curriculum? |
 |
How
do teachers teach and assess so that students learn
high-level skills? |
 |
How
do principals provide instructional, organizational, public, evidenced-based
leadership so that all students learn at high levels? |
Coursework
is designed to help students draw connections between theory and
practice, focusing on how to facilitate learning and change, as they assume
leadership roles in schools. Students have the opportunity to participate
in an intensive executive coaching experience with a principal and
a university mentor, both of whom serve as role models and learning
facilitators.
Throughout the program, students expand their knowledge and leadership as they receive feedback from faculty and cohort members in these Cross Cutting Competencies:
- Communication Skills
- Making Informed Decisions Using Data
- Reflective Practice
- Habits of Mind
- Professionalism
