IEDP Student Xinyi Zhou Wins June Photo Contest

July 15, 2013 - We are pleased to announce the first monthly winner of the the inaugural Penn GSE Summer Photo Contest: Xinyi Zhou, an M.S.Ed. student in the International Educational Development Program (IEDP). As part of her studies in the IEDP program, Zhou is spending the summer interning at the Pratham-ASER Centre, an educational development non-governmental organization (NGO) in India. Zhou submitted several photos from her internship to the contest. The winning photo shows a local woman from West Delhi conducting household family surveys as part of the work of Zhou and Pratham's research team.

The surveys are part of a research project called “Leveraging Literacy for Immunization,” funded by a grant from the Gates Foundation. Zhou says the team is “working to develop effective community-based approaches to improve vaccination rates, and ultimately, enhance child health and development in India’s poor and low-literacy populations.” You can read more about Zhou's internship (and see more photos!) on her blog.

As the June winner, Zhou will receive a Penn GSE t-shirt and a framed print of her photo. Zhou’s photo will also advance to the final round of the contest, in which each of the three monthly winners will be considered for the top prize: an iPad mini.

Penn GSE students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit photos of their summer activities to the contest. Entries for the month of July are due by midnight on Wednesday, July 31, and entries for the month of August are due by midnight on Saturday, August 31. More on submission guidelines and contest rules are below.
