New EdCasts: Penn in Haiti, Deliberative Democracy, Math Ed, and Community Schools

January 5, 2011 - Penn GSE EdCast ushers in the new year with the release of two new podcast episodes and two new videos highlighting the work of the School’s faculty.

HAITI'S EDUCATION REDEVELOPMENT [audio] A year after the earthquake that devastated Haiti, Penn GSE's Sharon Ravitch and Creutzer Mahurin, a senior leader in the Haitian Ministry of Education, are helping the country to rebuild its education system from the ground up.

EDUCATION IN A DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY [audio] At a time when the loudest voices dominate the public discourse, it can seem that we have forgotten how to reason together. Harris Sokoloff and the Penn Project for Civic Engagement offer a blueprint for productive citizen engagement.

JOHN PUCKETT [video], professor and education historian, addresses the question, “What would the ideal university-assisted community school look like?” His answer includes a description of his work with an urban leadership academy in West Philadelphia High School—and a real-world project that students at West Philly High recently completed.

JANINE REMILLARD [video], associate professor and chair of the Foundations in Education division, talks about the changing face of math education: “Our society has changed, how we use knowledge has changed, but our curriculum hasn’t kept up.” Remillard details some of her work in recrafting math education for urban schools.
