Susan Lytle Honored for Work in Teacher Ed

February 17, 2011 - The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) announced that Penn GSE Professor Susan Lytle and Boston College Professor Marilyn Cochran-Smith have been named recipients of the 2011 David G. Imig Award for Distinguished Research in Teacher Education.

Lytle and Cochran-Smith were selected for their ongoing contributions to teacher preparation, particularly because of their recently co-authored book Inquiry as Stance: Practitioner Research for the Next Generation. Inquiry as Stance and several other publications co-authored by Lytle and Cochran-Smith emphasize the need to develop a valid, valuable research base for teacher education.

Susan Lytle“In developing the concept of Inquiry as Stance and theorizing the work of practitioner researchers, Susan Lytle and Marilyn Cochran-Smith have honored the work of pre-service and in-service teachers and other educational leaders,” said Penn GSE Dean Andy Porter. “They have made a major contribution to our understanding about how to improve the quality of learning for all students.”

As past winners of AACTE’s Award for Excellence in Professional Writing (1995), Lytle and Cochran-Smith have been recognized for their work on teacher preparation and particularly the role that practitioners themselves have to play in educational change.

The Imig Award, given annually in honor of AACTE President Emeritus David G. Imig, will be present to Lytle and Cochran-Smith at AACTE’s 63rd Annual Meeting & Exhibits in San Diego on Saturday, February 26.
