Teaching, Learning, and Leadership
The one-year M.S.Ed. program in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (TLL) is designed to provide training for professionals who wish to work in educational and leadership capacities both within and outside of school settings. Recognizing that most learning occurs outside of the classroom, the program addresses informal learning environments in addition to classroom learning, curricula development, and school leadership. In this way, students gain broad professional capacities that correspond to contemporary sites of learning. (Applicants who are exclusively interested in classroom teaching and teacher certification should consider GSE's Teacher Education Program.)
Our faculty conduct research on teaching, learning, curriculum, and leadership in a variety of settings, including sites of formal education, out-of-school environments, and international contexts. With strong grant funding and faculty address these concerns in Philadelphia schools and institutions, and beyond. Their work ties in closely to GSE's broader focus on urban education and the school's commitment to equitable access to education across social strata.
With small student cohorts that emphasize collaborative learning, the TLL program provides students the opportunity to tailor their program to their particular areas of interest. Based on their focus, students work with faculty in teaching and learning, or with faculty in educational leadership. The program is designed so that students graduate with the ability to work in an informed way in both formal and informal educational settings. These range from after-school programs, museum settings, educational non-profits, to corporate professional develpoment offices.
