This full-time, one-calendar-year master’s program prepares graduates to work as mental health specialists, therapists, researchers, or school counselors. Graduates provide psychological services for children, adolescents, college students, families, or adults. Please see our FAQ page.

The program’s innovative format combines course work with hands-on field experience. Students receive core coursework in psychological services and are encouraged to design their program of study based on psychological specialization and other coursework within the Graduate School of Education. A two-semester field placement provides the opportunity for students to learn and practice counseling skills in a professional environment. Students select placements from our pool of high quality training sites including mental health clinics, schools, research centers, hospitals, and colleges. Students receive supervision both on-site and in a small seminar group format at Penn.

Many opportunities exist for student/faculty dialogue on professional issues. The coursework and practical experience therefore work together to reinforce the development of the student’s emerging professional identity and to prepare the student for a successful psychological career.

Students in the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program have options for further study and career goals.

  • Toward the end of the first fall semester, students in the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program may choose to apply to the advanced, second year Professional Counseling and Psychology Master of Philosophy (MPE) (PCAP) Program leading to licensure as a Professional Counselor. This program involves an additional year immediately after the one-year Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program’s year. The two one-year programs are designed to give students a continuous two-year program and increased field experiences, as required for preparation toward licensure. Career prospects include Mid-level clinical, assessment, and consultation professional positions in education and mental health fields in public and private institutions, hospitals and paraprofessional health organizations, and state and federal criminal justice systems. For more information, please visit the Professional Counseling and Psychology MPE website.            -or-
  • Toward the end of the first fall semester, students in the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program may choose to apply to the one-semester Post-Master’s Certificate Program in Elementary or Secondary School Counseling for the State of Pennsylvania . This program involves an additional semester after the Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program’s year, in which students work in a full-time internship supervised by a certified school counselor, and complete one academic course.

Requirements for School Counseling certification vary from state to state. Many states beyond Pennsylvania prefer candidates for certification who have completed a two-year academic degree in counseling. The Psychological Services M.S.Ed. Program immediately followed by the Professional Counseling and Psychology (PCAP) Program provides students with a continuous two-year program and increased field experiences as preparation toward certification in many states beyond Pennsylvania . For more information, please visit the Post-Master’s Certification Program in School Counseling web site.
