M.S.Ed.
The M.S.Ed. in Language and Literacy melds expertise in teaching English as an additional language with a complex understanding of pre-K-12 literacies (for students whose first language is English), thus preparing students to meet the needs of all language learners in diverse classrooms. Students engage in a rigorous, interdisciplinary course of study, which synthesizes and integrates the theoretical and practical issues facing teachers, learners, and administrators in multicultural/multilingual academic settings. This degree program, like the TESOL and RWL programs, emphasizes a commitment to professional development through service, teaching, and practitioner inquiry. Through core courses, fieldwork, and the development of a scholarly portfolio, students have many opportunities to teach, tutor, and participate in other service in the Philadelphia community, and to develop research projects that relate to their particular interests.
An intensive program of study offers students thorough grounding in language and literacy education for diverse student populations. The program requires 13 course units.
A portfolio project in Reading/Writing/Literacy and a TESOL thesis, which includes one course unit of fieldwork and an internship, constitutes the comprehensive examination for this dual specialization. The coursework for this degree simultaneously fulfills all requirements for the Pennsylvania Reading Specialist Certification and the ESL component of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ESL Specialist Certificate for students who have initial certification in elementary and secondary education.
