Language and Literacy in Education Division
The Language and Literacy in Education Division (LLED) provides students with a rich range of experiences needed to understand the ways in which language is learned and used in educational settings. Our internationally renowned faculty carry out research on such topics as second language acquisition, bilingualism and biliteracy, literacy instruction and assessment, language planning and policy, practitioner inquiry, professional development, sociolinguistics and family and intergenerational literacy. Students are prepared for careers in teaching, consultation, supervision, and research in educational linguistics, reading/writing/ literacy, intercultural communication, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
Language in Education has the following emphases:
- Sociocultural contexts in which language and literacy are learned and used. Students learn how linguistic and cultural diversity inform teaching and learning in various settings.
- Learning about the relationships of theory and practice through field-based experiences. Students participate in extensive inquiry-based fieldwork and do research at a wide range of sites.
- Commitment to urban education. Students and faculty work together in urban settings to understand and improve community and school-based learning.
- Strong international links. Students benefit from LED's international ties that facilitate individual and collaborative research around the world.
