ESL Specialist Certificate Program
The ESL Specialist Certificate is designed for public school teachers with a valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or II Certification who are currently working or interested in working as ESL teachers in public schools within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The ESL Specialist Certificate Program consists of six courses. They are listed and described below, together with a course schedule. All of the courses will be offered on the Penn campus, and wherever possible, to cohorts of teachers on an off-campus basis at their schools, as well as at school district and Intermediate Unit sites.

ESL Specialist Certificate Courses
EDCE 525: Instructional Approaches and Materials in ESL
Fall Semester, September 13-November 15, Thursdays., 4:30-7:30pm
Course Units: 1 CU/30 hours
This course provides an introduction to theory,
research and practice in language teaching. Readings cover major
issues in the field from the disciplinary perspectives of linguistics,
psychology, anthropology and education. The course covers
research-based ESL instructional methods, instructional design and
program development, needs assessment, materials adaptation and
modification and specific skills instruction. Class meetings and
assignments provide opportunities for students to raise questions,
react to readings, create materials and practice teaching.
EDCE 563: Educational Linguistics for Language Educators
Spring Semester, January 24-April 3, Thursdays, 4:30-7:30pm
Course Units: 1 CU /30 hours
This course provides an introduction to
linguistics and language studies for the purposes of teaching English
as a second language. The readings, in-class activities and
assignments cover basic components and theories in linguistics,
including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
Students develop and apply strategies to assist language learners in
different stages/components of language acquisition.
EDCE 554: Educational Sociolinguistics
Spring Semester, January 22-April 1, Tuesdays, 4:30-7:30pm
Course Units: 1CU/30 hours
The course begins with an overview of the field
of sociolinguistics and considers approaches to studying language and
social variation, language change and socialization, language and
social interaction. The focus of the class will be on educational
policy and classroom practice in the US in relation to bilingual,
bidialectal, and multiethnic student populations. Students will engage
in activities, readings and projects that encourage identification of
and reflection on the sociolinguistic, sociocultural, and
sociopolitical contexts of institutional racism and discrimination.
EDCE 515: The Study of Second Language Acquisition
Summer Session I, May-June, Mondays & Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30pm
Course Units: 1 CU/30 hours
This course provides students with a foundation in the processes of first and second language acquisition. Students will study the linguistic, sociopragmatic and cognitive dimensions of language acquisition and explore innovative ways of bridging theories of language learning with instructional practice. Course readings and activities focus on instructional interventions in second language acquisition and consider the roles of input, output and interaction in language learning. Summer Session II, July-August, Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:00am-12:00pm
Course Units: 1 CU/30 hours
This course provides a foundation in current formal and informal language learning assessment tools and methods. The focus of the course is on the ways that assessment can facilitate English language acquisition. Readings and class assignments and activities provide opportunities for students to explore the forms and functions of assessment in language and literacy learning and strengthen skills in identifying and working with special education students. This course will also include units on building support networks for English language learners both inside the schools and in students’ homes and communities.
EDCE 561: Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Education
Summer Session II, July-August, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:00am-12:00pm
Course Units: 1 CU/30 hours
This course explores key issues affecting educational policies and classroom practice in schools and classrooms with diverse groups of learners, in the US and internationally. The course begins with an historical and conceptual overview of diversity and considers approaches to teaching in multilingual, multicultural settings. Students will engage in activities, readings and projects that encourage critical reflection on individual attitudes as well as wider circulating ideologies of ethnicity, language use and culture. The course will include units on curriculum adaptation and reform for language and subject matter content, as well as on promoting sensitivity towards language and cultural diversity among school staff.
