Intercultural Communication (ICC)
Language and Literacy in Education Division
The Intercultural Communication Program prepares students to address problems that arise from cultural differences in values, assumptions and modes of interaction and to work in educational, social service, business, governmental, or intergovernmental agency settings. Students learn to analyze cultural and behavioral issues encountered in the interaction of individuals from different ethnic and national backgrounds. Career opportunities include international student advising, educational/cultural exchange, diversity training in corporate and non-profit organizations, international development and refugee/resettlement program development and administration. ICC graduates also find consultancies in business, industry and social service fields.
Students draw from the fields of linguistics, psychology, anthropology and other relevant areas of study within Penn GSE and across the University. Practical experience is an integral part of the program. Faculty work along with students so that they may complete supervised internships in their choice of local, national, or international environments and educational, professional, business, or social service settings. Internship sites may include foreign student advising offices, elementary and secondary schools, community outreach organizations, social service agencies, educational or cultural exchange programs, consulting firms, banks and businesses.
Students complete 12 course units (11 courses and an internship) and the comprehensive examination. They are encouraged to take courses across programs in the Graduate School of Education and throughout the University of Pennsylvania. Two course units may be transferred from outside the University of Pennsylvania. All ICC students participate in an internship which fulfills one course unit of graduate credit. Students must also write a thesis based on their internship experience which fulfills the master’s comprehensive examination requirement.
