The language and literacy program integrates expertise in teaching English as an additional language with a complex understanding of preK-12 academic literacies. The program thus prepares students to meet the needs of English language learners in diverse classrooms. Students engage in a rigorous, interdisciplinary course of study, which synthesizes and interrogates the theoretical issues facing teachers, learners, and administrators in multicultural/multilingual academic setting.

The degree program like the TESOL and RWL programs, emphasizes a commitment to professional development through service, teaching, and practitioner inquiry. Through core courses, fieldwork, and an internship, students have many opportunities to teach, tutor, and participate in other service in the Philadelphia community and to develop research projects that relate to their particular interests.
