DEVELOPMENT, LEARNING AND INSTRUCTION IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

The Graduate School of Education, University of California, Berkeley, seeks applicants at the Assistant or Associate Professor level for a position in human development and elementary teacher education (PreK-6th grade) to begin in the 2012-2013 academic year. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to issues of diversity and equity in elementary schooling and have an active research program that addresses one or more of the following areas of inquiry: children's learning and development; elementary instructional practices in particular domains of cognitive development; teacher learning in the context of preservice or professional development in elementary education. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in education, psychology, or a related field; a record of commitment to teacher education; and demonstrated excellence in teaching and research commensurate with the appointment rank. The faculty member who accepts this position will teach and advise doctoral students in Human Development and Education, whose faculty members draw upon developmental and cultural perspectives to advance research and scholarship in the study of cognitive and social development, and will provide leadership and teaching in the GSE's elementary multiple-subject MA/credential program.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH CENTER

Senior Research Assistant (full-time)
 
Summary: The Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking a full-time senior research assistant to support project directors on various research projects including but not limited to: 1) monitoring and evaluation of a national advanced technological center that aims to better prepare students in automotive manufacturing and technology at community and technical colleges to meet industry needs, and 2) a qualitative examination of online teaching and learning. Candidates should be resourceful, detail-oriented, intellectually-curious, and have an interest in community colleges, workforce development, and issues of access to and success in postsecondary education. The position is based in New York City and reports to a senior research associate. Please submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to be considered for this position.
 
Responsibilities:
·         Contribute to the design, data collection and analysis of existing and future qualitative research projects
·         Review and analyze relevant empirical literature
·         Draft and revise research-related documents, including data collection protocols, fieldwork summaries, literature reviews, and preliminary analysis reports
·         Prepare Institutional Review Board (IRB) materials for submission, including applications and supporting documentation
·         Communicate with research site personnel regarding fieldwork and other project-related activities under the supervision of senior project staff
·         Maintain records related to the progress of research activities at specific fieldwork sites and contribute to project update reports
·         Participate in and provide support for research team meetings 
·         Respond to internal and external requests for information
·         Represent CCRC at meetings and events and present research findings at conferences
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in higher education or equivalent social science degree
  • Knowledge of and experience with research design and methods
  • Experience developing and executing various facets of qualitative research studies, including research design and fieldwork (interviews, observations, focus groups, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing data and writing up results
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Interest in higher education and issues of access to and success in postsecondary education
  • Familiarity with quantitative research methods.
  • Travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Atlas TI, NVivo, or similar qualitative data analysis software
