Professional Biography
Dr. Burnes is a lecturer and coordinator of the master’s programs in Psychological Services and School Certification programs in the Applied Psychology and Human Development Division at Penn GSE. As part of these programs, Dr. Burnes teaches courses and advises students. Previously, he was an assistant professor and core faculty member of the Counseling Psychology M.A. and Ph.D. programs at Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Burnes has received numerous awards for teaching and professional service in the training of clinicians and has received extensive training on college and university teaching through his doctoral specialty at UC-Santa Barbara. Specifically, Dr. Burnes’ central teaching pedagogy involves helping clinicians to engage in exercises to increase their knowledge, attitudes, and skills for working with clients from marginalized communities. Dr. Burnes has worked primarily with college students in clinical practice, working at three different university counseling centers. He has also served as an administrator and interim director for a community mental health agency focused on services for the LGBT community and communities living with HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Burnes is a member of both the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Counseling Association. Within APA, he is an active member of Division 44 (Society for the Psychological Study of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues). He is also an active member of Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology), in which he currently serves on the executive boards for both the Section for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Awareness and the Section on Supervision and Training.

Research Interests and Current Projects
Dr. Burnes’ research and scholarly interests revolve primarily around identity development for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. He has conducted qualitative research projects that have investigated how lesbian, gay, and bisexual people of color come to know their sexual orientation identity and how they share this chosen identity with others. He is currently investigating the experiences of transgender and intersex individuals in therapy. In addition to his research interests, Dr. Burnes currently serves on the Steering Committee for the new Professional School Counseling Program at Penn. He is also an ad-hoc reviewer for both the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and the Journal of Training and Education in Professional Psychology.
