Professional Biography
Prior to his appointment at Penn GSE in 2007, Dr. Harper was an assistant professor and research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Penn State University. He also formerly served as executive director of the Doctor of Education Program at the University of Southern California, assistant director of the Kelley School of Business MBA program at Indiana University, and in a variety of student affairs administrative capacities.

Dr. Harper received the 2005 Emerging Scholar Award and the 2006 Annuit Coeptis Award for early career achievement, both from the American College Personnel Association. He was also awarded the 2004 National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Melvene D. Hardee National Dissertation of the Year Award for his research on Black male undergraduates.

Dr. Harper has presented more than 100 research papers, workshops, and symposia at national higher education professional conferences. He is currently director of research on the NASPA Board of Directors, as well as a member of the advisory committee for the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education.

Research Interests and Current Projects
With the support of six research grants, Dr. Harper recently completed data collection and is now engaged in analysis for the National Black Male College Achievement Study, the largest known empirical investigation of Black male undergraduates. For the National Study, he personally conducted 219 face-to-face individual interviews with Black men at 42 colleges and universities in 20 different states. His report, Black Male Students at Public Flagship Universities in the U.S.: Status, Trends and Implications for Policy and Practice, was released in November 2006 by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.

He also conducts campus racial climate audits at universities across the nation and is co-author (with Sylvia Hurtado) of “Nine Themes in Campus Racial Climates and Implications for Institutional Transformation,” which is published in the New Directions for Student Services volume he co-edited (with Lori Patton) on responding to the realities of race on college campuses.
