Student Research @ Penn GSE

Research is an integral part of the learning experience at Penn GSE with students engaging in research of their own as well as participating in faculty research.

Among the many opportunities for engaging in research are: Penn GSE's Center for Urban Ethnography (CUE) convenes the Ethnography in Education Forum, the largest annual meeting of qualitative researchers in education. The Forum hosts a diverse selection of workshops convened by researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in the fields of education and anthropology.

The Educational Linguistics Forum (ELF) explores the dynamic relationship between linguistics and education by supporting and promoting student research in the transdisciplinary field of educational linguistics.

Working Papers in Educational Linguistics (WPEL) is a student-managed journal that presents work by students and faculty within the University of Pennsylvania community. WPEL’s focus is on research specifically related to areas of educational linguistics.

The Annual Spencer Symposium. Entitled Urban Research: Inquiry and Implications, this program features the work of university students who are involved in research and/or outreach in urban settings. Attendees include faculty, community members and students from a wide range of academic disciplines at Penn and other universities. Contributors will talk about their work in a round-table discussion format. This student-run symposium is organized by the Spencer Fellows at Penn GSE.

Urban Education Research Seminars are conducted as a part of Penn GSE's Spencer pre-doctoral training program. Designed for our Spencer Fellows and other interested Ph.D. candidates, they bring students, faculty, and community leaders together to discuss topics relevant to urban education and urban education research. The goals are to increase interdisciplinary discussion on urban education and to help prepare Ph.D. candidates to conduct and apply research designed to improve urban education.

Penn GSE Perspectives on Urban Education Journal. A student-run, on-line publication, the Urban Ed journal provides as an interactive forum to investigate critical issues in urban education. Submissions of research findings as well as studies in progress are encouraged from graduate students, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers.
