Foundations and Practices of Education Division

Programs in the Foundations and Practices of Education Division focus on both educational practices and their social, cultural, philosophical, historical, and political underpinnings. Faculty are particularly concerned with the contexts of education—how teaching and learning are inextricably connected to the social institutions and cultural practices that surround and permeate educational settings. To prepare for careers in teaching, school leadership, education research, college and university teaching, and community organizations, students follow a core curriculum in both sociocultural foundations and learning and teaching, as well as pursue research and field experiences (e.g., internships, service learning, field-based research projects, mentorships, and assistantships) designed to bring together theory and practice. Students develop a program of study designed to both to enrich their knowledge in a specialized area and to broaden their intellectual horizons through elective coursework.

Foundations and Practices of Education offers four doctoral programs: Education, Culture, and Society (Ph.D.); Educational Leadership (Ed.D.); and Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education (Ph.D., Ed.D.), and the Mid-Career Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.). The division also offers five master’s programs: Education, Culture, and Society; International Educational Development; Learning Sciences and Technologies; School Leadership; and Teacher Education.
