The academic division in Foundations and Practices of Education (FPE) focuses on teaching and learning, both within and outside of schools, and places special emphasis on urban contexts. Faculty are particularly concerned with the social and cultural contexts of education-how teaching and learning are inextricably connected to the social institutions and cultural practices that surround and permeate educational settings. To prepare for careers in teaching, school leadership, education research, college and university teaching, and community organizations, students follow a core curriculum in both sociocultural foundations and learning and teaching, as well as pursue research and field experiences (e.g., internships, service learning, field-based research projects, mentorships, and assistantships) designed to bring together theory and practice. Students develop a program of study designed both to enrich their knowledge in a specialized area and to broaden their intellectual horizons through elective coursework.
Foundations and Practices of Education includes three areas of specialization that offer doctoral and masters programs: Education, Culture, and Society; Educational Leadership; and Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum.
In addition, the division offers a number of specialized programs in educational practice and leadership, including Educational Leadership for Aspiring Principals; International Educational Development; Learning Technologies in Education; Mid-Career Doctorate in Educational Leadership; and Teacher Education.
