Research Projects
The Eight-Nation Education Research Project is a continuation of the successful Six-Nation project, which held its final conference in October 2001 at Penn. Both Thailand and Korea had observer status at the final conference and expressed an interest in joining any future collaborative project among the nations. At a planning conference in Bangkok in June 2002, it was unanimously agreed to extend the original six-nation project to eight.
The most recent meeting was in St. Gallen, Switzerland in May 2006. Research conducted for the project included the topics higher education, mathematics and science education, high school to higher education transition and teacher quality, supply and retension, which were each presented by researchers from Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the U.S., respectively.
The Six-Nation Education Research Project was an international initiative, coordinated by GSE International, to conduct comparative education research. Scholars and policymakers from Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United States examine higher education, language and literacy, education and economic growth, education evaluation and indicators, vocational education, and mathematics and science education. Each of the six research projects aimed to incorporate the central theme of education as the key to economic growth.
Through its Consortium on Policy Research in Education, Penn GSE is involved in collaborative research with the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and East China Normal University focused on the K-12 inspection system.

Comparative Research on Mathematics and Science Teacher Preparation
in APEC Economies
Representatives from government and educational organizations in nine APEC economies are collaborating on comparative research in math and science teacher preparation. The project will focus on secondary mathematics and science teacher preparation, including pre-and in-service training. Participants at the June 2008 meeting, hosted by GSE-International, discussed each economy's teacher preparation system for math and science, focusing on teachers' pedagogical and content knowledge, opportunities for ongoing learning, and connections between research and practice.
