Language and Literacy in Education Division

The academic division in Language and Literacy in Education (LLE) provides students with a rich range of experiences needed to understand the ways in which language is learned and used in educational settings. Our internationally renowned faculty carry out research on such topics as second language acquisition, bilingual education, literacy instruction and assessment, language planning, practitioner inquiry, teacher education and professional development, sociolinguistics, family and intergenerational literacy, and children's literature. Students are prepared for careers in teaching, consultation, supervision, and research.

There are several Language and Literacy in Education specializations, housed in two programs: the Educational Linguistics program comprising the Ph.D. in Educational Linguistics, M.S.Ed. in Intercultural Communication, and M.S.Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL); the Reading/Writing/Literacy program comprising M.S.Ed., Ed.D, and Ph.D. specializations; and the division-wide M.S.Ed. specialization in Language and Literacy. For an overview of program essentials, click here.
