The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education is one of three Ivy League graduate schools of education and is a national leader in education research and the preparation of skilled education professionals. Its alumni include pathfinding teachers, heads of school boards, leading advocates for public education, scholars, school counselors, champions of corporate/organizational learning, and heads of government agencies.
A pioneer in instructional theory, assessment, psychology of learning, and classroom training, GSE is distinguished by its "inquiry" approach, which motivates and prepares students to think like educators. The Inquiry Stance obliges teachers to continuously re-evaluate their classroom practices and professional perspectives in order to satisfy pupils' needs more thoroughly. Penn GSE emphasizes the interactive relationships of theory, research, and practice in everything we do. We believe that education research produces knowledge to inform practice, but also that research must be informed by the issues, needs, and concerns of practitioners. Quality professional programs are central to our mission, rigorous and relevant to the real world of education practice.
Over the past decade, Penn GSE has launched a series of executive-modeled degree programs for education professionals and other entrepreneurial activities that serve non-traditional students. Among those programs are the Executive Doctorate Program in Higher Education Management, the Mid-Career Doctorate in Educational Leadership, the GSE/Teach for America Urban Education program, the Executive Master’s in School and Mental Health Counseling, the PennCLO Program, and the many activities of the Penn Center for Educational Leadership.
