GSE Student Wins Award for Social Entrepreneurship

October 6, 2010 - The Manhattan Institute has named Penn GSE doctoral student Scott Stimpfel as recipient of its 2010 Social Entrepreneurship Award. Stimpfel, who is working toward his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, is Executive Director and co-founder of Resources for Educational and Employment Opportunities.

Founded by three community college graduates, Resources for Educational and Employment Opportunities (REEO) is a non-profit organization founded to help community college students reach their full potential. By providing financial, educational, career, and leadership resources, REEO helps talented, underserved community college students to transfer to four-year universities, earn their bachelor’s degree, and obtain a professional position upon graduation.

Stimpfel attended Pasadena City College, Glendale Community College, and East Los Angeles Community College before transferring to the University of Southern California. He holds an M.B.A. with a dual specialization in Corporate Finance and Entrepreneurship & Innovation from New York University’s Stern School of Business. Prior to becoming Executive Director of REEO, he was vice president at Lehman Brothers’ New York office where he specialized in securitized products.

The Manhattan Institute is a think tank known for its advocacy of free-market solutions to policy issues, awards its annual Social Entrepreneurship Awards to those who have originated and effectively implemented a nonprofit organization providing direct services to those in need.
