Africa
GSE faculty and associated faculty are involved in a variety of research projects in eleven African countries, from Ethiopia to South Africa. The projects vary broadly in their focus. In Ghana and Nigeria, for example, GSE professor Dan Wagner is working with the Internatial Literacy Initiative to improve literacy levels and instructional practices; in Uganda and Zambia, GSE professor Rebecca Maynard is active in an HIV-prevention program.
Focus on: South Africa
Marybeth Gasman leads a study abroad program focused on higher education in South Africa each summer. Students also study the history and culture of South Africa. During the study abroad, students attend workshops at many different types of institutions, work with a non-government organization on issues of poverty and education, and participate in myriad cultural and historical activities. Students visit various parts of the country, including Cape Town, Soweto, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, and Pilansburg.
