GSE Professor Margaret Spencer Named Fletcher Fellow
Penn GSE Professor Margaret Beale Spencer was among the national artists, writers, and scholars selected as a winner of the 2006 Alphonse Fletcher, Sr., Fellowship.
Fellows receive a $50,000 stipend to fund work on race relations or African-American culture. According to Henry Louis Gates Jr., chairman of the selection committee, "We think of these as Guggenheims of race issues."
Established in 2004 by Alphonse Fletcher, Jr., chairman and CEO of Fletcher Asset Management, the Fletcher Fellowships support institutions and individuals working to further the goals of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.
Mr. Fletcher described his vision for the 2006 Fellows: "Thoughtfully examining the past and present, this class, like the inaugural group of Fletcher Fellows, will contend with and provoke significant questions related to the American experience of race."
Among the other awardees for this year are Stanford professor Lawrence Bobo, Harvard Law professor Randall L. Kennedy, artist Lorna Simpson, playwright and performer Anna Deveare Smith, and New York Times editorial writer Brent Staples. Previous Fellows include writer Stanley Crouch, anthropologist Nina Jablonski, and artist Glenn Ligon.
During her fellowship, Spencer will work on a project entitled "Patterns of Resiliency and Resistance: Crafting Identities in a Post-Brown Era of Privilege and Risk," which will build on her substantial body of research regarding the psychosocial development and academic achievement of minority youths. This Fellowship joins several other honors earned by Dr. Spencer, including a 2005 Senior Career Award for Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest from the American Psychological Association.
