Reform Efforts
Implementing a Balanced Program (Math Literacy 1)
Participants strengthen collegial support as they
construct
a classroom environment that actively involves students
in mathematical investigations and the relationship
between math and the real world. Participants develop,
implement, and reflect on mathematical ideas, strategies,
and assessment approaches. The concepts presented in
the seminar can be incorporated directly into the participants’
current math texts.
The seminar guides participants in establishing a classroom
environment rich in problem-solving, logical reasoning,
and computation, introducing practical strategies and
concepts to teach
mathematics focused on the NCTM Standards.
The seminar also links reading/writing/talking with
the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Integrating Teaching/Learning/Assessment in Math Literacy
(Math Literacy 2)
This seminar brings participants to the next level of
involvement with PLN literacy frameworks and the NCTM
Standards of Math 1. Participants collaborate with colleagues
and reflect on these frameworks and their current practice
as they engage in goal-planning and congruent assessment
approaches in their classrooms and schools
for the year
(or years) to come.
The seminar emphasizes curricular planning, discussions
about classroom, district, and state benchmarks and
standards, curricular problem solving, document review
of student work, and revisiting and extending reading/writing
and math literacy approaches from Math 1.
Implementing Writing and Notemaking Strategies
in the Math Classroom (Math Literacy 3)
Participants in this seminar explore a variety of ways
to engage students in the writing and notemaking processes
while
continuing to integrate the PLN literacy frameworks
in the math classroom. Strategies presented in this
seminar assist participants in finding new and creative
ways to use writing and the textbook as effective teaching
and learning tools. All strategies can be incorporated
into the participants’ current math texts. The
seminar emphasizes teacher-guided and student-centered
writing and notemaking strategies.
