Uplifting a People: Essays on African American Philanthropy and Education
Edited by Marybeth Gasman and Katherine V. Sedgwick

About “Uplifting a People”
Taking as its subject the often neglected topic of charitable giving among African Americans, this volume documents the history of Black philanthropy: from its beginning as a response to discrimination to self-help among freed slaves to its expansion to include the support of education, religion, the arts, and civil rights. Chapters review contributions of figures like Booker T. Washington and Thurgood Marshall and discuss the often-surprising practices of contemporary African-American donors.
