AERA- American Educational Research Association

The American Educational Research Association is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results.

AERA is the most prominent international professional organization with the primary goal of advancing educational research and its practical application. Its 20,000 members are educators; administrators; directors of research, testing or evaluation in federal, state and local agencies; counselors; evaluators; graduate students; and behavioral scientists.

The broad range of disciplines represented by the membership includes education, psychology, statistics, sociology, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology, and political science.

 
AAA- American Anthropological Association

The American Anthropological Association (AAA), the primary professional society of anthropologists in the United States since its founding in 1902, is the world's largest professional organization of individuals interested in anthropology.  The purposes of the Association shall be to advance anthropology as the science that studies humankind in all its aspects, through archeological, biological, ethnological, and linguistic research; and to further the professional interests of American anthropologists; including the dissemination of anthropological knowledge and its use to solve human problems.  The AAA, which advances these purposes though its publications, meetings and various programs, is the only organization that represents anthropology's diversity and speaks for the entire discipline in this time of critical challenges and changes.

 
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English.
 
 
IRA- International Reading Association

The International Reading Association is a professional membership organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit. Our members include classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, university faculty, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, and parents. With members and affiliates in 99 countries, our network extends to more than 300,000 people worldwide.

The International Reading Association serves its members with professional resources designed to further four goals:
1) Advocacy: To support research, policy, and practice that improves reading instruction and promotes the best interests of all learners and reading professionals;
2) Partnerships: To establish and strengthen national and international alliances with other organizations, including governmental, nongovernmental, and community agencies, businesses, and industries;
3) Research: To encourage and support research that promotes informed decision-making by reading professionals, policy makers, and the public;
4) Global Literacy Development: To identify, focus, and provide leadership on significant literacy issues.

EACUBO- Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers

EACUBO Purposes:
· to encourage effective and efficient administration of the business and financial affairs of colleges and universities and to encourage a high standard of professionalism among business officers

ASHE- Association for the Study of Higher Education

ASHE is a scholarly society with about 1,300 members dedicated to higher education as a field of study. The Association promotes collaboration among its members and others engaged in the study of higher education through research, conferences, and publications, including its highly regarded journal, The Review of Higher Education. ASHE values rigorous scholarly approaches to the study of higher education and practical applications of systemic inquiry. It is committed to diversity in its programs and membership, and has enjoyed extraordinary success in involving graduate students in Association activities.


NACUBO- National Association of College and University Businesses

NACUBO is non-profit organization that seeks to anticipate the issues affecting higher education and to promote sound management and financial practices at colleges and universities.  To meet these goals, NACUBO:
- represents more than 2100 college and university business officers
- conducts research in higher education finance, accounting, business operations, and management

- disseminates information.

NASPA- National Association for Student Personal Administration

NASPA is the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy and practice.  NASPA provides professional development, promotes exemplary practices, and is a leader in policy development. NASPA helps senior student affairs officers and administrators, student affairs professionals, faculty, and other educators enhance student learning and development. ACPA- American College Personnel Association

The mission of ACPA is to serve all levels of higher education student affairs professionals through educational and developmental programs, publications and networking opportunities in order to enable these educators to excel in their positions, to achieve career growth, and to contribute to the profession.

AAHE is the individual membership organization that promotes the changes higher education must make to ensure its effectiveness in a complex, interconnected world. ACTFL- American Council for the Training of Foreign Languages

Over the past 30 years, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and reliability in meeting the changing needs of foreign language educators and their students. From the development of Proficiency Guidelines, to its leadership role in the creation of national standards, ACTFL focuses on issues that are critical to the growth of both the profession and the individual teacher. Through their membership, new as well as veteran teachers are making an important investment in the future.

The mission of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages is to promote and foster the study of languages and cultures as an integral component of American education and society. ACTFL must provide visionary yet practical leadership, create policy and programs to further our goals, and initiate and build programs that will enhance the profession and enable it to be proactive in a changing world. 

 
LSA- Linguistic Society of American Annual Conference
 
THE LINGUISTIC SOCIETY OF AMERICA was founded in 1924 for the advancement of the scientific study of language. The Society serves its nearly 7,000 personal and institutional members through scholarly meetings, publications, and special activities designed to advance the discipline. An interest in linguistics is the only requirement for membership. 

Membership includes the quarterly journal Language (March, June, September, December), LSA Bulletin (issued a minimum of four times per year, one issue a membership directory), and the privilege of submitting papers for the Annual Meeting held in early January. 

The Society also publishes the Directory of Programs in Linguistics in the United States and Canada. Among its special educational activities are the Linguistic Institutes held every other summer in the odd years and co-sponsored by a host university. Inaugurated in 1928, these Institutes provide intensive training in applied and theoretical linguistics on the graduate and undergraduate level. Fellowships for students are available; visiting scholars are welcome.


NABE- National Association for Bilingual Education

The National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) is a dynamic non-profit membership organization headquartered in our nation's capital. NABE is the only professional organization at the national level wholly devoted to representing both the interests of language-minority students and the bilingual education professionals who serve them.  Promoting educational excellence and equity through bilingual education, the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) is the only national organization exclusively concerned with the education of language-minority students in American schools.


AAAL- American Assoc. of Applied Linguistics Annual Conference

Founded in 1977, the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) is a professional organization of scholars who are interested in and actively contribute to the multi-disciplinary field of applied linguistics.

AAAL members promote principled approaches to language-related concerns, including language education, acquisition and loss, bilingualism, discourse analysis, literacy, rhetoric and stylistics, language for special purposes, psycholinguistics, second and foreign language pedagogy, language assessment, and language policy and planning.

Nationally and internationally, the annual AAAL conference has a reputation as one of the most comprehensive and exciting language conferences! At each conference new ideas are generated, disciplinary boundaries are crossed, and research is shared about the role of language in all aspects of cognition and social action, including language learning and teaching.
The AAAL conference is known for its in-depth symposia and focused workshops on key issues in applied linguistics; sessions on a wide range of research studies, in progress or completed; its stimulating and often provocative plenaries; and access to the latest publications via the book exhibit. Last but not least, the AAAL conference is the place for networking, for established and new professionals, and for graduate students.

EPA- Eastern Psychology Association

Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) was founded in 1896 and is the oldest of the regional Psychological Associations in the United States.  Its sole purpose is to advance the science and profession through the dissemination of professional information about the field of Psychology.  EPA achieves this goal by conducting its  annual meeting where the members of EPA present the latest advances in professional and scientific work to their colleagues.  EPA welcomes psychologists from all fields across the discipline. 


PPA- Pennsylvania Psychology Association

The purpose of the Association shall be to advance psychology in Pennsylvania as a means of promoting human welfare.  It carries out this mission through activities that educate and support the professional development of our members, that educate the public through disseminating and applying psychological knowledge, that maintain and build organizational strength, and that advocate vigorously for public access to psychological services.

Examples of these activities include:

  • advocacy at all levels of state government for legislation and regulations that increase the public's access to psychological services
  • continuing education events to enhance psychologists' knowledge base
  • a monthly newsletter/magazine, the Pennsylvania Psychologist
  • consultation available to PPA members and the public on questions pertaining to the practice of psychology, including ethical, legal, insurance, and other issues


APS- American Psychological Society

Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies has grown to be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education.
