Commencement 2008
Graduation Information for Faculty
The GSE Commencement Ceremony will be held at Franklin Field on Saturday, May 17th at 10AM. Click here for a campus map designating Franklin Field. You must arrive at the Donaldson Room in Weightman Hall by 9:15 AM with your academic regalia. Enter at the Southeast entrance of Franklin Field. The faculty processional begins at 10:00AM
Please do not bring any valuables with you to Franklin Field. If necessary, you may check your belongings at the coat check in the Donaldson Room staffed by an Allied Security guard. A continental breakfast will be available for you beginning at 7:00AM. Click here to see an illustration of Franklin Field.
Parking
Free Parking is available for GSE faculty & volunteers in Lot 5, which is adjacent to Franklin Field from 33rd Street. You will need to enter the lot at 32nd and Chestnut Streets as the main entrance to the lot on 33rd street will be closed all weekend. Click here for a campus map.
Academic Regalia
Cap and gown are required for both University and GSE Commencement ceremonies. For information: http://www.upenn.edu/commencement/partic/capandgown.html
Regalia will be available for pick-up on the second level of Penn Bookstore from May 13 through May 16, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Prepare for the Weather.
Philly weather is unpredictable! It could be hot, cold, damp, windy, raining or all of these. Check the forecast and dress accordingly. Sunglasses are essential as the stage faced directly into the sunlight.
In the event of severe weather, the location will be changed to the Palestra, which is directly next to Franklin Field. Updates will be posted by 6:15AM on Saturday at:

Processional
The faculty processional begins at 10:00AM. Christine Lee and Cheryl Hughes will marshal the faculty processional through the concourse where they will enter Franklin Field from the Southeast entrance and ascend the stage from stage right.
Doctoral Students
Doctoral students will carry their hoods and caps when they process onto the field because they will be called to the stage to be hooded by their committee chair, then receive their “diplomas” from Dean Porter. (Actual diplomas are mailed by the Office of the Secretary of the University.) Click here for a demonstration of how to hood your doctoral student, for a full screen demo, right click it.
Upon returning to their seats, the doctoral graduates will be asked to stand, face the audience, don their caps, and move the tassels on the caps from right to left. The audience will be asked to applaud the doctoral graduates of 2008, and then the doctoral graduates will be seated.
Master’s Students
After the commencement address, master’s students will be called on stage to receive their “diplomas” from Dean Porter. (Actual diplomas are mailed by the Office of the Secretary of the University.)
Then What?
The ceremony will conclude at approximately 12 Noon when the faculty will recess, followed by the graduates. The University Commencement Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 19 th in Franklin Field at 9:30AM. A picnic lunch for GSE will be held at 12Noon in the GSE Courtyard on Monday, May 19th directly following the University ceremony.
