How to Register for Classes

Students enrolled in the following programs are registered by program staff and do not need to follow the instructions listed below:

Executive Doctorate in Higher Education Management (Ed.D.)
Executive Program in School and Mental Health Counseling (M.S.Ed.)
Mid-Career Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.)
School Leadership Program (M.S.Ed. and/or Certification)
Teach For America Program (M.S.Ed. and/or Certification)
Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program (M.S.Ed.)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW AND CONTINUING STUDENTS:

*You will need a PennKey and password to complete the registration process.

  1. Consult the GSE academic calendar for advanced and open registration periods.
  2. Review the course offerings for the semester (http://www.upenn.edu/registrar/). Click on "Course and Room Roster," and choose "E" (for Education).
  3. Go to Penn In Touch (http://www.upenn.edu/pennintouch/), type in your PennKey and password, click on “Registration & planning”, and follow the directions on the screen. (If you have a PennKey ID and are having problems logging in, please visit the PennKey website for help: www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey).
  4. Once registered, begin checking for course information, syllabi, and readings on Canvas (http://penngse.instructure.com). Please note that students may not have access to Canvas courses until the start of classes.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR NEW STUDENTS:

Students enrolled in programs not listed above should read the note corresponding to their home division below before registering for classes:

Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Division
Students enrolled in programs in the Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Division will receive faculty advisor assignments and Planned Programs of Study, which outline program requirements, in mid-August. While students may register for courses in advance, they must meet with their academic advisor to discuss their Planned Program of Study and receive final approval for their fall course selections. Students should contact Veronica Aplenc, (vaplenc@gse.upenn.edu), the division manager, with questions about registration, permits, and the Planned Programs of Study.

Reading/Writing/Literacy Division
Students enrolled in master’s programs in this division will automatically be registered for required courses in their first semester. Students should contact the manager, Penny Creedon (pennyc@gse.upenn.edu), as soon as possible to request registration in specific sections of core courses.

Students enrolled in doctoral programs in this division should consult with their advisors about course selection and then contact the manager, Penny Creedon (pennyc@gse.upenn.edu), for permits and registration for courses as soon as possible. Students may register for courses outside of their division themselves following the directions above.

Educational Linguistics Division
Students enrolled in master’s programs in this division will be registered for required courses in their first semester. Students should contact the program manager, Sarah Peyton Kaufman (speyton@gse.upenn.edu), as soon as possible to request registration in specific sections of core courses.

Students enrolled in the doctoral program in this division should consult with their advisors about course selection and then contact the program manager, Sarah Peyton Kaufman (speyton@gse.upenn.edu), for permits and registration for courses as soon as possible. Students may register for courses outside of their division themselves following the directions above.

Higher Education
Students enrolled in programs in the Higher Education Division may register in advance for courses, but must consult their academic advisor for final approval of their course selections and their planned programs of study. Contact the coordinator (karen@gse.upenn.edu) with additional questions.
