Professor Emerita Susan Lytle to Receive Distinguished Scholar Lifetime Achievement Award

October 13, 2014 — In December Penn GSE Professor Emerita Susan Lytle will receive the Literary Research Association’s 2014 Distinguished Scholar Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award recognizes Lytle’s decades of pioneering work in literacy, teaching and teacher learning and the influence she has had on the LRA membership.

Microgiving @ Penn GSE launches campaign supporting Penn AHEAD

October 1, 2014 – Penn GSE is using its first microgiving campaign of 2014-2015 to support Penn AHEAD. Founded in January 2014, the Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy is dedicated to creating more accessible, more effective, and more democratic higher education institutions in the U.S. and other nations.

The School District of Philadelphia and Penn’s Graduate School of Education Launch First-Ever Formal Researcher-Practitioner Partnership

Philadelphia, PA– A formal research partnership between Penn’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) and The School District of Philadelphia (SDP) has been launched, with the aim of assisting the District’s school turnaround and new schools efforts. The School District of Philadelphia-Penn Graduate School of Education Shared Solutions (SDP-Penn GSE Shared Solutions) effort is one of 20 researcher-practitioner partnerships being funded over the next two years by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) within the U.S. Department of Education.

Six Philadelphia Schools Open with a Dual Language Program Guided by Nelson Flores

September 8, 2014 — The important thing to remember in a bilingual education program, Nelson Flores told the teachers, is that a skill is a skill.

If a child is learning the skill, it initially doesn’t matter if they learn it in English or Spanish, Flores said. As they learn the languages, they will learn to think in the languages, and the skills will translate.

Program Director Encourages Early Childhood Play

August 25, 2014 – Childhood play is more than scraped knees and grass stains—it’s a critical tool for development. Through play, children learn by solving problems, exploring, and practicing self-control. Penn GSE Senior Fellow Frances Rust wants to help teachers encourage playful activity, and in July she was invited to China to speak at the first Sino-U.S. Summit on Play.
