Dr. Teresa Pica, a professor in Penn GSE's Educational Linguistics division and an alumna of the School, died unexpectedly on November 14, 2011 at her home in Philadelphia.
One of the world's leading experts in the field of second language acquistion, Dr. Pica championed the idea that students learn best when they use their second language in meaningful, task-based, face-to-face interactions—an idea that is now at the center of SLA teaching and research.
The Penn GSE community was profoundly saddened at Dr. Pica's passing. Here are a few resources and links that give a sense of her work and impact.
Penn GSE is establishing a scholarship fund In memory of Dr. Pica. Donations to the Memorial Fund may be made online or by check. Send checks to Penn GSE: Pica Memorial Fund, University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education, Attn: Alexis Wolson, 3700 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
