The Penn-ECNU M.S.Ed. in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) is currently under development by GSE's Office of International Programs. For U.S. teachers wishing to teach Chinese language and culture in American high Schools, TCFL will train instructors to teach Chinese as a foreign language, through coursework in the theory and practice of Chinese language teaching, as well as related courses on Chinese culture and history. Students who hold a bachelor's degree in Chinese studies or language or who already have experience in teaching Chinese will have the opportunity to earn their M.S.Ed. from East China Normal University in Shanghai and their teaching certification from Penn GSE. The 13-month program will divide the students' time between Penn and ECNU.
