Academic Organizations & Programs

  • African Studies Center, which focuses on contemporary and historical Africa, coordinates course offerings and events in a variety of disciplines ranging from history, language, and culture to health, science, and business.
  • Center for East Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary unit composed of faculty members whose teaching and research focus primarily on China, Japan, Korea, and bordering areas.
  • Latin American and Latino Studies approaches Latin American and Latino cultures - not only through "high culture" but also through folk and other forms, from pre-Columbian times to the present, from Rio de Janeiro to New York and beyond.
  • Middle East Center brings together contemporary research on the modern Middle East with the Penn's renowned programs in ancient and medieval languages and civilizations.
  • South Asia Center coordinates faculty and students drawn from many departments and schools who develop and participate in community and campus-wide programs and activities pertaining to South Asia.
  • South Asian Studies, founded in 1948, is the oldest South Asia area studies program in the nation and home for all faculty teaching South Asia languages and cultures, ancient and modern.
  • The South Asia Regional Studies Graduate Group provides support for master's and doctoral students.
