A day-long convening of educators from around the area presented by the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia (TIP) and the Philadelphia Writing Project (PhilWP). The keynote presentation will be led by James Forman, Jr., Law professor and author of Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, winner of the Pulitzer Prize; Forman was a seminar leader at the Yale National Initiative’s Summer Intensive Program. SLA teacher Matt Kay will lead a morning plenary session on his book, Not Light, But Fire: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom. James H. Lytle, Susan L. Lytle, Michael C. Johanek and Kathy J. Rho will lead a featured session on their book Repositioning Educational Leadership. Featured workshops will include: Reading is Writing: Student Success through “Kid Writing;” Poetry Inside Out: The Art of Translation; Teaching with Primary Sources; Inquiries from a Summer Institute on Partnering with Youth and Families, led by Penn GSE author Gerald Campano and María Paula Ghiso; Penn Literacy Network: Resilience and Literacy.
