The University of Pennsylvania Predoctoral Training Program in Interdisciplinary Research Methods for Field-based Research in Education, sponsored by the Institute for Education Sciences (IES), welcomes Dr. Rekha Balu to our weekly seminar series.
Key Considerations When Designing and Implementing an Intervention
Presented by Dr. Rekha Balu, Senior Fellow and Director, Center for Applied Behavioral Science, MDRC
While a number of resources have emerged in the past decade to increase the rigor of impact evaluation, cost analysis and other research practices to evaluate interventions in education, there is relatively little standard guidance about designing and implementing interventions. Academic researchers, vendors, intermediary organizations and schools and districts themselves tend to follow different processes when designing interventions. As a result, it can be difficult to compare and synthesize lessons across interventions. This presentation will offer a framework for intervention design – critical ingredients, aspects that should be transparent and pre-registered, and a standard process – to accompany the standard processes for designing a rigorous causal inference study.
