IDENTITY AND POWER IN TRANSLATION: WHOSE LANGUAGE DO YOU TEACH?

An Online Series of Roundtable Discussions on February 26 and April 23, 2021

Translation. Communicatively oriented language educators have long exhorted learners to think in the target language. “Compose in the language of instruction. Don’t translate!” Research on multilingualism and translingual pedagogies, however, has illuminated the affordances of L1 use for L2 learning and communication. In this symposium we bring together language educators and translators to ask:

  • How do language learners utilize translation as a mediational device for language learning?
  • What can the practice of translation tell us about being multilingual and multilingual language use?
  • How can the use of translation as a pedagogical practice support the development of critical language awareness?

In this interactive conference, panelists will address these and other questions as we consider the role of translation in language teaching and learning.

Registration for the event is free.
