Join WSDM for a day of service honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  On Monday, January ​18​, 201​6 we will join ​the Penn African American Resource Center​ (AARC)​​ for a day of service on our campus and in the Philadelphia community​.​The day will begin at 8:​30​ AM and run until ​12:30-2:​00 PM (depending upon your selected service project). ​ ​Please find pertinent information regarding the service events below:​
  • The MLK Day of Service will begin Monday, January ​18th at ​8​:30 AM, and we will meet on campus ​for a complimentary breakfast ​at ​the Hall of Flags, ​Houston Hall (3417 Spruce Street). ​ 
    • *WSDM Board members will be wearing Blue ​WSDM T-shirts so that you may easily locate us.
  • The Netter Center will host the Class of 1980 students from Sayre Mentoring Program (9:30am-1pm).
    • A community service project to benefit local hospitals, day care centers, and other local community-based programs. 
    • Participants will create artwork, blankets, and inspirational t-shirts for members of this community  ​–  held in Houston Hall​.
  • ​Community Beautification Projects at​ Community Education Center (CEC), 3500 Lancaster Avenue; Comegys Benjamin B School, 5100 Greenway Avenue; & Martha Washington School, 766 N. 44th Street, Philadelphia, PA, (10am-2pm)
    • The beautification project consists of painting, organizing classrooms, clean up/clean out debris as well as a few other light projects, so dress accordingly.  
    • Transportation, which will be provided by the University free of charge​ at 9:45am​,​ ​will take volunteers to and from service sites​.​
  • ​Working with Helping Hands to create gifts that will be donated to area shelters, homes, hospitals, and charities​ ​–  held in Houston Hall (10am-12:30pm)
  • ​Creating books on ​t​ape for Philadelphia Reads ​to promote literacy for Philadelphia youth ​​– held in Houston Hall​ (10am-12:30pm)..
  • ​Making tutus and super heroes capes that will be donated to local day care centers ​– held in Houston Hall (10am-12:30pm).
