Penn GSE is honored to welcome Dr. DeMarcus A. Jenkins as our first presenter in this year's Visiting Scholars Speaker Series. Dr. Jenkins is an assistant professor in the School of Social Policy and Practice at the University of Pennsylvania with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. His work focuses on the interconnectedness of education and criminal justice, the relationship between education reform and urban development, and the politics of policy change and how marginalized populations interact with the policy process.
Please note dinner will be provided.
The theme of this year's series is Punishment and Education. Schools and other educational spaces rely on myriad modes of punishment to establish restrictive institutional cultures and deter individual and collective acts of resistance. As the stakes for noncompliance intensify under increasingly authoritarian state legislatures, university boards of directors, and federal agencies, how can we make sense of—and perhaps push back against—the evolving landscape of punishment in K–12 schools and higher education?
