Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy (AHEAD)

The Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy (AHEAD) is dedicated to fostering open, equitable, and democratic societies through higher education. Located within the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania, AHEAD conducts original research and applies a multidisciplinary, research-based approach to address the most pressing issues regarding the societal contributions of higher education in the United States and the world. AHEAD also draws on research to improve institutional practice and public policy by offering technical assistance and professional development activities in the U.S. and around the globe.

Center for Minority-Serving Institutions

The Center on Minority Serving Institutions at Penn serves as a repository for research, data, best practices, emerging innovations and ideas on and within MSIs. With support from our sponsors, the Center on MSIs supports funders, researchers, policymakers, MSIs and scholars to promote the strengths and address challenges facing these institutions.

Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL)

The Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL) examines how college- and career-ready standards are implemented, if they improve student learning, and what instructional tools measure and support their implementation. C-SAIL comprises a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education, and American Institutes for Research. The Center is funded through a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. 

Collaboratory for Teacher Education

The Collaboratory for Teacher Education at Penn GSE is a laboratory for the design, implementation, and study of experimental approaches to teacher education. Guided by our commitments to diversity and equity, developing core practices, and the power of inquiry in teacher development, we collaborate with educators, schools, districts, and researchers to create opportunities for teacher and teacher educator development. The Collaboratory is home to several teacher education programs at Penn GSE, which provide multiple pathways to excellence in teaching. It is also a growing hub of resources for teachers, teacher educators, and teacher education researchers.

Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE)

A joint effort of the graduate schools of education at Penn, Columbia-Teachers College, Harvard, Stanford, the University of Michigan, Northwestern, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Focuses on school reform, governance, policy, and finance.

Institute for Research on Higher Education

Founded in the mid-1980s, the Institute for Research on Higher Education (IRHE) is a university-wide research institute that conducts research relevant to policymakers and educational practitioners.

National Center on Adult Literacy / International Literacy Institute

National Center on Adult Literacy / International Literacy Institute is devoted to applied R&D and policy on issues of literacy across the life span, on regional, national and international basis.

Penn Child Research Center

The Penn Child Research Center promotes the educational and psychological well being of children through the application of informed social and scientific policy.

Racial Empowerment Collaborative

The Racial Empowerment Collaborative (REC) is a research, program development, and training center that brings together community leaders, researchers, authority figures, families, and youth to study and promote racial literacy and health in schools and neighborhoods.
