Hartley Awarded Spencer Post-Doc

Dr. Matt Hartley, assistant professor of education, has been awarded a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue research on the civic engagement movement in higher education.

During his fellowship, Dr. Hartley will work on a project entitled "Advancing the Civic Purposes of Higher Education: An Examination of an Educational Reform Movement," which will explore why and how the idea of civic engagement gained currency on college campuses, chart the trajectory of its growth, and examine why so many American colleges and universities have responded to this call for change.

Says Hartley, "During a time when intense competition and declining resources are increasingly viewed as irresistible forces that will define the future of American higher education, the civic engagement movement has provided instructive examples of how institutions can navigate change on the basis of educational ideals rather than mere expediency."

Administered by the National Academy of Education, the NAE/Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellowships are designed to promote scholarship in the United States and abroad on matters relevant to the improvement of education in all its forms.
