Penn Hosts International Research Forum to Improve Math, Science Teacher Preparation

On October 26-27, Penn GSE hosted delegations of senior education researchers and policymakers from nine members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum to plan an international study on secondary-school math- and science-teacher preparation.

Educators and education researchers from the U.S., Korea, Russia, China, Thailand, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore aim to launch a study focused on improving teacher education as well as supports for teachers during the early years of their professional practice.

Penn GSE Hosts 30th Annual Ethnography in Education Research Forum

On February 27 to 28, 2009, the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania will host the 30th Annual Ethnography in Education Research Forum, the largest such meeting of qualitative researchers in education in the world.

Shirley Brice Heath, a professor of education and anthropology at Brown University, will deliver the opening address on Friday morning. Her keynote speech will kick off two day's worth of presentations given by researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in the fields of education and anthropology.

Penn’s Project for Civic Engagement Hosts Community Forums on the City Budget

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania Project for Civic Engagement is hosting four community forums across the city to gather citizen input that can be incorporated into developing the city’s proposed budget for 2010.

"The City Budget: Tight Times, Tough Choices, Citizen Priorities" was developed by the Penn Project for Civic Engagement, as part of the Great Expectations project, using a grant from the William Penn Foundation.

Lawrence Sipe Book Receives NRC Award

Lawrence R. Sipe, associate professor in Penn GSE's Language and Literacy in Education division, has been awarded the 2008 Edward B. Fry Book Award by the National Reading Conference (NRC) for his book Storytime: Young Children's Literary Understanding in the Classroom.

Penn GSE Researcher Takes Home ASHE Award

Penn GSE Assistant Professor Shaun Harper has been awarded the 2008 Early Career Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education.  

The award is given to a recipient for a significant body of scholarship or a single extraordinary research achievement by a higher education scholar and in recognition of potential for future research.

Porter Reappointed to National Assessment Governing Board

Penn GSE Dean Andy Porter has been appointed to the National Assessment Governing Board for his second four-year term, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced recently.

Wortham Named W.T. Grant Foundation Fellow

The William T. Grant Foundation has selected Penn GSE Professor Stanton Wortham to its fourth group of Distinguished Fellows. Dr. Wortham received this award for his work in studying the challenges that districts, schools, and practicing educators face in serving immigrant Mexican students.

The title of his project, "Involving Parents in the Schooling of Immigrant Mexican Students," reflects his interest in assisting such schools and districts in creating and implementing a plan to increase involvement of these parents in the education of their children.
