Penn GSE Helps West Philadelphia School Host Environmental Festival

June 11, 2014 – The classroom bustled with excitement as kindergarten students holding construction paper posters stepped forward for their moment in the spotlight.  Standing in a row in front of their guests, a class of first-graders, the children proudly shared the knowledge they had gained through weeks of studying live hermit crabs. As they taught the older students, the kindergarteners pointed to their drawings and discoveries on the posters, among them “Hermit crabs wash up like people,” and “Living things can grow.”

Leading Educational Research Centers Respond to White House Report on Boys and Young Men of Color

June 2, 2014--In response to a recent task force report to President Barack Obama on My Brother’s Keeper, an initiative that brings together private sector and philanthropic organizations to improve the lives and outcomes of boys and young men of color in the United States, seven university-based research centers have jointly issued a statement.

May 28, 2014 - Penn GSE's Centennial Commencement was held on Saturday, May 17th at the historic Franklin Field. Dr. Anthony Bryk, President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, delivered the Commencement Address. Ebony Thomas Awarded Prestigious Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship

May 16, 2014 -- Ebony Elizabeth Thomas, an assistant professor in Penn GSE’s Reading/Writing/Literacy Division, was awarded a 2014 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. The prestigious fellowship enables scholars to focus on research that the Academy considers likely to make a “significant scholarly contribution” to the field of education, and provides funding to release recipients from one year of teaching.

Professor Ghaffar-Kucher Receives 2014 Jackie Kirk Outstanding Book Award

June 4, 2014 –Ameena Ghaffar-Kucher, associate director of the International Educational Development Program, has earned an Outstanding Book Award for her new edited volume, Refugees, Immigrants and Education in the Global South: Lives in Motion.

Pam Grossman named Dean of Penn's top-ranked Graduate School of Education

March 26, 2014 – Pam Grossman has been named dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, effective Jan. 1, 2015. The announcement was made today by Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price. 

Innovative Education Fund Initiative Graduates First Cohort With “Demo Day”

March 20, 2014Penn’s Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) has announced that the Education Design Studio, Inc. (EDSi), a $2.1 million hybrid incubator and seed fund built specifically for education ventures, “graduated” its first cohort of entrepreneurs with a “Demo Day” last week. The inaugural cohort in the Penn GSE collaboration known as the Education Design Studio, Inc. (“EDSi”) debuted to what one venture’s founder described via Twitter as “outbursts of glee.”

Tony Sinanis Named 2014 NYS Elementary Principal of the Year

March 21, 2014 - Cantiague Elementary School principal Tony Sinanis has been chosen as the 2014 New York State Elementary Principal of the Year.  This annual award, provided by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), selects one outstanding candidate from an array of nominees.  These nominees are typically administrators who create a better overall community by providing exceptional experiences for their students and parents.

Dr. Laura W. Perna selected as a 2014 AERA Fellow by the American Educational Research Association

March 7, 2014 - Penn GSE’s Dr. Laura W. Perna, Professor of Higher Education and Executive Director of Penn AHEAD, has been selected as a 2014 AERA Fellow by the American Educational Research Association.  One of 22 nationwide recipients, Dr. Perna will be inducted at the April 4th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
