April 21, 2009 - A professor learned how young children respond to picture books.
Asked what a book titled Red Riding Hood might be about, Keyron answers, "Probably she read and she write a lot, and she live in the 'hood."
Penn GSE Professor Larry Sipe is delighted by the triple pun but, since he's been studying young children's literary understanding for the past 12 years, he's not particularly surprised by Keyron's verbal dexterity.
April 15, 2009 - Glenn Cummings, former Speaker of the House in the Maine House of Representatives and current student in Penn GSE's Executive Doctorate in Higher Education Management, has been selected as deputy assistant secretary of education in the Obama administration. He was offered the administration post by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
April 14, 2009 - Christopher N. Steel, a student in GSE's Mid-Career program and the director of Curriculum, Instruction, & Technology at the Emerson Schools (NJ), has been named a 2009-2010 Fulbright Fellow by the United States Department of State. The Comisión Fulbright del Ecuador in Ecuador and the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board jointly selected Steel on the basis of his academic and career achievements and leadership in the field.
April 8, 2009 - “After a week of researching and investigating a problem and finding a solution using nanotechnology, I found myself very attracted to the subject,” Sarita Saju recalls. Her interest in the subject was sparked at a summer session of ITEST-Nano, a collaboration of Penn GSE, Penn’s Nano/Bio Interface Center, and the School District of Philadelphia.
April 2, 2009 - Lawrence Sipe, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, has been named a Fellow of Munich's International Youth Library, a collection of more than 600,000 children's books. The fellowship began on March 1 and will end May 31. Sipe is an authority in early-childhood literacy development.
This fellowship is one of 12 offered this year, and Sipe is the only scholar from the U.S. for 2009.
March 30, 2009 - For the third year running, a Penn Alexander School student will represent the City of Philadelphia in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, held in Washington, D.C., in May.
This year's winner, sixth-grader Sowsan Salaam, won the Philadelphia Tribune/Scripps Howard Regional Spelling Bee by nailing the word ubiquitous. Salaam, who competed against 29 fifth- through eighth-graders from schools around the city, was a finalist in last year's regional but tripped up on the word belligerent.
March 26, 2009 - Penn GSE is hosting the "Educational Well-Being of African-American Boys: A Philadelphia Story of Challenges and Possibilities" Thursday, April 30, at 3 p.m. at the Inn at Penn. Penn GSE Professor John Fantuzzo will present this lecture with discussants Arlene Ackerman, the superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia, and Don Schwarz, Deputy Mayor for Health & Opportunity.
March 25, 2009 - Like so many other cities across the country, Philadelphia entered 2009 with a growing budget deficit. Clearly, there would need to be changes to city programs and services if the city were to weather the recession. Equally clearly, nobody wanted to see cuts to any essential service — and the definition of essential varied greatly.
How, then, should city leaders decide what programs to cut? And how could this happen without alienating city residents?
March 13, 2009 - Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education announced today that they have received a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to study the relationship between an accelerated high school curriculum, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and college-related outcomes. The study involves analyses of 12 years of data from the Florida K-20 Data Warehouse and the National Student Clearinghouse.
March 13, 2009 - GSE student teachers learn about the place their students call home
"It's the most dangerous neighborhood in Philadelphia. I went out there and I drove around. I can’t teach there."
A student in the master’s program in teacher education voiced his concern about his practicum site to the program coordinators. But they were not easily deterred.
The next year, the students walked.
