Professional Biography
Dr. Annie McKee is a Senior Fellow and Director of GSE's Penn CLO Executive Doctoral Program as well as a faculty member with the Penn Med Ed program. She teaches leadership and emotional intelligence in these programs as well as in Penn GSE's Mid-Career Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership.
Annie is a bestselling author whose work has been translated into over 25 languages. Her newest book, How to Be Happy at Work: The Power of Purpose, Hope, and Friendship (Harvard Business Review Press, September, 2017) shows how fulfillment at work is the first step on the road to success. This message is amplified in recent podcasts, Facebook live, and webinars, as well as in her Harvard Business Review article, “Happiness Traps: How We Sabotage Ourselves at Work.” Annie has authored and co-authored numerous other bestselling books, including Primal Leadership (with Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis), Resonant Leadership, Becoming a Resonant Leader, and Management: A Focus on Leaders. Annie is also a regular contributor to HBR.org and Psychologytoday.com.
Annie advises business and institutional leaders around the globe and provides guidance on leadership and management practices that enable individuals to soar and companies to live their mission and serve their customers, clients, and citizens. She supports executives one-on-one and works with senior teams to help these leaders reach their potential while ensuring the sustainable success of their organizations. She speaks widely around the world on topics including resonant leadership, happiness and engagement at work, emotional intelligence, and how to build a culture—or a microculture—that ensures full engagement, inclusion, and a fulfilling work experience for all employees. Annie has been honored as one of Business Week’s Top 100 leaders and hailed as “the high priestess of executive coaching.”
Annie McKee received her doctorate in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University and her baccalaureate degree, summa cum laude, from Chaminade University of Honolulu. Prior to joining Penn as a senior fellow, Annie was the co-founder of the Teleos Leadership Institute, a consultancy that provides leadership development and advisory services around the world. During this time, Annie was an adjunct professor at Penn GSE and prior, she taught at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and the Aresty Institute of Executive Education; she also served in the office of Penn’s Executive Vice President. Annie contributes to her field and the community through pro bono work, including co-designing and conducting the Police Executive Leadership Institute with the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the Holocaust Memorial Museum. She also serves on the Consortium for the Advancement of Learning and Development (a think tank sponsored by McKinsey) and the Marshall Goldsmith Top 100 Coaches, a group dedicated to serving humanity through individual and collective efforts in businesses and the public sector. Annie is a former member of the Advisory Board of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Division of Science and Technology (2015-2017).
