Applied Psychology and Human Development

Our APHD programs provide students with a foundation in the core concepts of psychological intervention: assessment, intervention, learning and development, and field research.

Education, Culture & Society

Our Education, Culture, & Society Division provides students with strong theoretical and disciplinary foundations for the study of a broad range of educational processes and forms of cultural production, transmission, and socialization across the life span.

Education Policy

The Education Policy Division offers training in the study of education, reform, and policy for individuals interested in careers in academic, governmental, and non-governmental research settings.

Educational Linguistics

Home to three of Penn GSE’s longest-standing programs, our ELX Division has an established national and international reputation of excellence with an interdisciplinary focus on language learning and teaching, as well as the role of language in learning and teaching.

Higher Education

The Higher Education Division provides students with a broad understanding of higher education and successful practices of campus management.

Quantitative Methods

Our Quantitative Methods Division prepares scholars for careers in academic institutions, government, and research firms worldwide.

Reading/Writing/Literacy

Our Reading/Writing/Literacy Division prepares students to be practitioners, researchers, and policy makers in a variety of educational settings, including K-12 schools, community-based literacy programs, and educational publishing.

Teaching, Learning, and Leadership

Preparing teachers, educational leaders, entrepreneurs, and researchers, the TLL programs address practice-based and theoretical problems in schools and community settings related to teaching and learning, learning sciences and technologies, curriculae, informal learning, and educational leadership.

Programs for Prospective Teachers

Our Ivy League teacher education programs blend the most respected education research – much of which is produced by our own faculty and students – with cutting-edge classroom practices to prepare dynamic, effective, and committed teacher-leaders for K-12 schools.

Executive Education

Penn GSE offers several executive-style degree programs designed for working professionals. Our Exec Ed program options range from a unique collaboration with Teach for America to School Leadership to a special degree for Chief Learning Officers.

Additional Offerings

In addition to traditional graduate programs Penn GSE also offers general admission, undergraduate submatriculation, undergraduate Urban Education minor.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

An intensive, theory-based degree, the Ph.D. program at Penn GSE will require you to undertake independent research culminating in a dissertation that makes an original contribution to knowledge about educational practice or policies.

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

The Ed.D. is a terminal degree designed to give you the theoretical and foundational knowledge and research skills needed to excel in your chosen field. Students engage in a variety of educational fields including K-12 leadership, postsecondary education, policy, and consulting.

Master of Philosophy in Education (M.Phil.Ed.)

Our M.Phil.Ed. program is designed for students who hold a master’s degree but want to further expand their skills.

Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.)

Our M.S.Ed. programs cover a wide range, giving students foundational knowledge of the field of education and preparing them for professional positions in a broad range of organizations.

Master of Science (M.S.)

Our M.S. program is designed to give students specialized knowledge and skills for advanced graduate study.

Joint/Dual Degrees

GSE master’s and doctoral students may enroll in courses across the university to earn a joint degree (one degree in two fields at once) or a dual degree (two degrees in two fields). Advance permission and acceptance into both programs are required.

Undergraduate Minor

Three minors in Urban Education, each with a specific focus, offer exceptional opportunities to bridge learning between the classroom and the community.

Executive Education

We offer a unique collection of executive-style degree programs designed for the working professional.

Undergraduate Study

Penn undergraduate students may pursue a minor in Urban Education at GSE with three options for area of focus.

Submatriculation

Undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for an accelerated program of master’s degree study by seeking admission to GSE as submatriculants.

General Admission

General admission status is available to students who wish to enroll in education courses for personal or professional development without applying to a degree program.
