Professional Biography
Dr. Cherylann Schmidt currently teaches Research Methods and Capstone Writing in the Urban Teaching Residency program at Penn GSE. She has been part of the program since 2017. In addition to being part of the Capstone Writing seminar, Dr. Schmidt has also taught secondary ELA Methods I & II. When she's not teaching at Penn, Dr. Schmidt can be found teaching eighth grade students English language arts. She has been a middle school teacher in both urban and suburban settings in New Jersey since 1993.
Dr. Schmidt is an alumna of Penn GSE's Reading Writing Literacy program, earning her Ed.D. in 2015. Completing her doctorate while teaching full time is still her biggest achievement. This experience truly helped her understand the unique position Urban Teaching Residency students undertake--especially in Research Methods and Capstone Writing. Dr. Schmidt's area of interest and research focuses on adolescent literacy. Her dissertation, Multiple Genres, Multiple Voices, and dissertation defense earned With Distinction. It was through this writing experience that she has found a passion for academic writing. Dr. Schmidt continues to write and is currently working on a book.
