What happens to educational opportunity when restriction pressures ripple through entire systems?

Since 2020, Mica Pollock, professor of education studies at the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues have conducted multiple studies on how nationally networked efforts to restrict K–12 education related to race, sexual orientation/gender identity, and “DEI” have reduced fundamental educational opportunities—both for specific student subgroups and for all students collectively.

These attacks are also slowing school and system-wide improvement. In this session, Pollock will present an overview of restriction efforts since 2020 and examine specific mechanisms that are stripping away concrete learning opportunities in K–12 systems.

Finally, Pollock explores how to shift the focus back to expanding and enriching learning in public schools—so every student has the chance to thrive.
