In support of Together for Good's fourth priority of elevating education's role within democratic society, Penn GSE is thrilled to welcome Dr. Michael Feuer for a special talk entitled "Notes for a Political Economy of Civics Education: Collective Action as Product and Process." Dr. Feuer is a visiting professor at Penn GSE and visiting scholar at Penn Washington this year. He is the immediate past dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development and professor of education policy at the George Washington University, past president of the National Academy of Education, and nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Feuer’s research has focused on the economics of education, international comparative assessments, teacher preparation, inequality and academic opportunity, science policy, use of research to inform policy, philanthropy, and civics education.
In 2025, Feuer was awarded a $2.4 million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to launch the Forum on Democracy and Education to support the development of enriched civic education content in teacher preparation programs. Through the forum, he will collaborate with educators, school leaders, foundations and policymakers in the U.S. and internationally to develop innovative civic education strategies.
